I think the one of the hardest things about being a LDS member as well as being African american is that Blacks weren't able to receive the priesthood as soon as other members. And believe me, I have no strife against the church or the authorities for these instances for I know the Lord has a reason for everything that he does. The reason I bring this up, because there has been a couple times in my religion where someone tries to give reason to why blacks couldn't receive the priesthood. The truth is The Lord is no respecter of persons. We are all Gods children, made in the image of him. The color of our skin it only a minor detail. It has little to do with who we really are. The Lord makes no mistakes. I feel that it is dangerous for us to try to understand why the Lord does the things he does, because we are only human. The truth is that we don't even have the capacity to access all the muscles in our brains.
Issiah 55:8-9 "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways Higher than your ways, and my thought than your thoughts."
I have always been interested in hearing how an African American feels about this subject! You are so right...because I've always been confused why blacks weren't given the priesthood sooner, but I guess it doesn't matter because the Lord does everything for a reason. Thanks for your post!
ReplyDeleteI found this link that also explains things a little further on the matter. I really recommend it. http://beta-newsroom.lds.org/topic/race-relations
ReplyDeleteThanks Natalie for your comment!
I think it's interesting that critics of the Church fail to mention it's the first time in the history of the Church that this has happened. The priesthood was always restricted, be it through birthright (Abraham, Jacob/Esau), tribe (Levites), and, during Jesus' life, people (Jews). For the first time in history, it has been extended to all worthy males, which is cause for joy.
ReplyDeleteGreat post. I've experienced similar issues with people giving excuses for why men have the priesthood and women don't. I kid you not that someone once said that the reason for this is because men are brutes and need the priesthood to remind them to be good. I agree, it's stupid to try and make our own reasons for why God does what he does.
